The Falkland Islands and De-Mining

Have you ever wondered about mines? Well my friends here do everyday since the Argentineans mined their breeding beaches. In the days after the Falkland War these penguins were regularly blown up when they came ashore to live. These beaches are too hazardous to De-mine The penguins have learnt where the "Safe" Paths are unfortunately from seeing many of their group perish.

This photograph was taken in 1989-1990 at "Penguin Walk". The whole of this stretch of coast is now littered with mines. The tide and the action of the waves over the beaches makes even cleared areas unsafe as the mines are constantly being washed up on the beaches from other mine fields.
